Teacher tastes student-made Spam sandwich; get recipe here

Have you ever wondered why your junk email is called "spam"? It's actually an allusion to a popular potted meat food, also called Spam, which many people unfairly judge as a junk food. If you've ever been curious about this food, or how to make a sandwich using it, read on.

Spam is a brand of canned cooked meat produced by Hormel Foods Corporation. It was first introduced in 1937 and gained its popularity after its worldwide use in World War 2. It was difficult to deliver fresh meat to soldiers on the front lines during world war 2 so Spam became a big part of soldiers' diets. Over 150 million pounds of Spam were purchased by the military before the war’s end. During the war, Spam was introduced to many places in the Pacific. It immediately became part of the native diet, especially in and around military bases in Hawaii, and is thus a unique part of American history.

I cooked a Spam sandwich for Mrs. Rasmussen, who had never tried the meatstuff ever before, and she said, “I loved it and ate the entire thing even though I wasn't that hungry. It tasted almost exactly like a BLT, but saltier.”

If you would like to recreate this delicious treat, here is what to do:

You'll need a can of spam, a knife, a frying pan, a fork, butter, hamburger buns or bread, lettuce, tomato, mayonnaise, mustard, salt, and pepper.

Step 1:

Turn one of your oven burners up to 6. Put some butter in the pan.

Step 2:

While the butter is melting, open your can of spam. Empty in onto a plate and cut

it into ⅛” rectangles.

Step 3:

Move the melted butter around in the pan to ensure that all the bottom of the pan

is covered. Put two pieces of spam in the pan and let them cook for about two

minutes on each side or until a dark brown.

*Repeat step 3 until all your spam is cooked.*

Step 4:

Get your bread or hamburger buns. Put mustard and mayonnaise on each slice.

Then, sprinkle a little salt and pepper on the mustard and mayonnaise. Put lettuce

and tomato on the bread. Then, put on your desired amount of spam. Put the

bread together, and enjoy with some sweet iced tea.

Hope you enjoy!
