Teachers should consider students' learning styles more

Albert Einstein, a well-known physicist and scientist, once said,”Everyone is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” In other words, everyone is unique and they take a different approach at everything they do. This has to do with learning styles, such as visual, kinesthetic, and auditory. Visual learners learn best by seeing or creating images, kinesthetic learners learn best by acting out something, and auditory learners learn best by listening or discussing a subject. The issue that is most argued is whether or not teachers should teach children in school according to the way they learn. Some people believe that teachers should not shape their lesson plans to fit children’s learning styles;they think that standardized tests should be changed to fit a child’s needs. I, however, believe that teachers should change their lessons to fit each student's’ learning styles. Students need to be taught the way they learn because it helps enhance their memory, improve their study habits, and lower their stress levels.

First of all, it's important for students to be taught according to the way they learn because it helps enhance their memory. Since every child learns in a different way, there are a variety of ways to enhance one’s memory. Visual learners can enhance their memory by highlighting or color coding notes which can help them picture words they see, especially when taking a test. Kinesthetic learners can enhance their memory by demonstrating concepts and repeating a motion which can help them associate information with a feeling or smell. Auditory learners can enhance their memory by tape recording info when they are studying which can help them when they are taking a test because they can remember words that were said on the tape. By following tips that help your specific learning style, your brain will adapt and remember information better.

Secondly, teaching students the way they learn can improve their study habits. In today's world, students don’t like to study and they want to get good grades, but they can't get good grades if they don't study. Some students don't know how to study efficiently and effectively because they have no knowledge of what their learning style is. Once you figure out your learning style, you need to get some tips on ways your learning style studies. One way visual learners can study is by associating an image with words they see in their notes and picture them when taking a test. One way kinesthetic learners can study is by role playing or performing standards which can help them remember what standard goes with whatever move they practiced. One way auditory learners can study is by saying and repeating information out loud. Sometimes, you can even ask a friend to study with you by verbally asking you questions that go along with the topic and you can repeat them back to them. Good study habits help improve one’s memory and it comes in handy when you are being assessed.

Lastly, students need to be taught the way they learn because it can help lower stress levels. Most kids really care about their grades and some gets stressed because either they don't understand something or they are having trouble balancing work between classes. For example, when I have work in every single class, I get stressed because I have to find a way to manage school work and karate at the same time. If students are taught according to the way they learn, then they can improve their studying habits, which improves their memory, which improves their grades, therefore lowering stress levels.

Despite numerous arguments on whether or not students should be taught according to their learning style, some people, such as college professors or teachers in general, who think that the only thing that should be changed about learning are the tests, specifically the fact that they not every child can understand them. While this argument could very well be true, the argument that each child will benefit from changing the format of tests is ridiculous. If kids don't have a good memory and good study habits, then they won't do good on tests, so changing the test format won't help. One way you can improve the children’s test scores is to give the test to the child according to the type of test their learning style does well on. For example, if you are a visual learner, teachers can give you a written test or a test where you have to create images relating to the concepts. If you are a kinesthetic learner, teachers can give you a test where you have to demonstrate concepts and if you are an auditory learner, teachers can give you a test by reading the question out loud and you answer them.

Students need to be taught the way they learn because it helps enhance their memory, improve their study habits, and lower their stress levels. Ultimately, everyone learns differently and because of that, teachers can't just teach everyone the exact same way. The people in school today, is the next generation, and the world’s future so teaching them according to the way can help them achieve anything and make the future a better place. Some people seem to just ignore this subject but really thinking it through and telling the world your opinion can help make a difference.
