Students speak out about lunch room chaos
Students at Airport High School are given approximately 60 minutes to get to their designated lunch area where they have to wait about 30-45 minutes in line to receive their food. With all of this done, half of their lunch is already taken by just trying to get their food.
Lunch isn't just eating; it's students time to socialize, to be on phones, and to actually have a little bit of freedom while at school.
Another reason lunch is so chaotic is students along with teachers are cutting the lines. People tend to allow their friends to get in front of them, as a good friend that would be nice; but what about all the people your allowing your friends to cut in front of? Eventually it adds up, from one friend to five friends. This may cause frustration among students at Airport.
Jasmine C., a current student at Airport, had a lot to say about the the long lines and cutting. “When I felt like I’ve honestly been in line for like ten years, I don't think cutting is fair. I also don't think that it's fair that teachers should be able to cut. I understand they are trying to get their lunch too, but hey isn't that the reason we’re all here?”
Another freshman named Jakeria H. talks about what needs to be done in order to help at least some of the many problems at lunch. “First of all I think the should be some administrative watching the lines as well as some watching to see if people are fighting, and their should be more younger staff. I mean all we have is the same four old ladies, not that they are not respected, but the process would be sped up if [quicker servers] were hired."
Despite complaints about lunch, students do recognize that the lunch ladies and administration do the best the can with what they have. Also, lunch twice as long as it was last year, and longer lines just might be the price students have to pay for this privilege.
