Students have strong opinions on ID-width dress code rules

As the temperatures begin to heat up, more and more students are beginning to wear shorts and tank tops, but with the new dress code rule that states, “tank top sleeves must be ID width, and shorts must be ID length from the knee," wearing this type of warm-weather clothing is nearly impossible.

Freshman, Grace T., said that wearing long jeans and pants seemed like the option to go with if she did not want to be dress coded. She also said, “It’s ridiculous that they force us to wear long pants and be hot.” In other words, most students wear long pants and sweat because they have no clothing that fits the rule. Tank tops tie into this issue because students are required to wear jackets if their shirt does not uphold to the new standards.

Grace also brought up another valid point in this argument. “Clothing stores don’t sell shorts and tank tops that are the way the school wants,” Grace stated.

Stores in the area do not sell shorts “right above the knee” that a student our age would consider fashionable. In fact, Grace claimed that at most stores a label or sticker is on the shorts stating their length. “I usually see 3 inch shorts or 6 inch shorts,” she recalled.

Grace said that Bermuda shorts were “out of style” for girls. Basketball/soccer shorts are more the style for boys nowadays, but for girls short shorts are in. Questions were brought up about whose “fault” it is. Whether it’s popular culture’s fault for making and producing these types of clothing, or if it’s the school’s fault for holding such unusual standards from others.

Other schools still enforce the “fingertip rule” and the “three finger rule”, while at the time this seemed to be a bit much, Grace stated that it seemed to be the better of the two options of dress code rules. Grace also said she wants the fingertip rule back. Other student interviewed said similar things.

For clarification on dress code, see an administrator, especially Mrs. Diimmler, but don't let it be during first block when you get sent to the cafeteria for being in violation!!
