REVIEW: A Dog's Purpose

The movie A Dog’s Purpose, released into theaters on January 27, is about a dog who is mainly trying to find his purpose in life. Throughout the movie, he gets “reincarnated” into another dog, with a different owner, and every time he doesn’t find his purpose while in their lifetime. In addition to trying to find his purpose in life, he makes many friends and always tries to see the positive side of things. A combination of humor, cuteness, and a heartwarming relationship between a boy and his dog makes this movie a hit sensation, especially for viewers who are animal lovers.

The main plot of the movie is for the main character who is a dog, to find his purpose in life by bonding with a little boy named Ethan who is his owner. The relationship between the two just make your heart melt. The actors create a family-friendly atmosphere, ultimately making the plot believable. This means that throughout the movie, the audience gets so connected with the characters on screen that when something happens, they start to feel a variety of emotions. It also means that the actors perform in such a way that it makes the audience relate to something in the movie. For example, much like the dog in the movie is trying to find it’s purpose in life, teenagers in high school try to do the same thing.

The technical aspects of the movie included many different camera angles. For example, at one point the camera was from the dog’s perspective, and another time the camera was from the audience’s point of view. This creates a more personal connection with the characters. The fact that the choice of cast was very diverse is another way the movie creates a more personal connection with the characters. Having a diverse cast, gives you different points of view about people’s lives and how having a pet companion helps them go through life.

Another important factor that I liked about the movie is how every scene kept me on the edge of my seat. Normally when I watch a movie, I move around a lot but this movie made me not want to move because I was so into it that it felt like I was there with all the characters. This has to do with how the movie was directed towards a targeted audience which in this case is animal lovers.

Many reviews on sources such as Rotten Tomatoes gave the movie bad reviews mainly talking about how they didn’t agree on the dog’s final purpose and that it was a waste of time to see it. Rotten Tomatoes gave the movie a 33%, and IMDb gave the movie a 5.2 out of 10 rating. Despite all the bad reviews, I believe this movie is a great family-friendly movie and it’s great for animal lovers.

If you are an animal lover, I definitely recommend you watch this movie and hurry up and watch it in theaters because it won’t be there for much longer! A Dog’s Purpose is set to come out on DVD on May 2, 2017.
