AHS has changed over last 20 years; one former student compares, contrasts
Airport High School has changed significantly in the past 20 year, and one former student tells about the differences and similarities between school back in her time and school in present time.
Kendra, a student of the graduating class of 1994, discussed the contrasts between school during her time and school now. “The 2017 Experience” was described to her and she pointed out some differences and similarities.
“For one, the school was remodeled,” said Kendra. This is true. The school was a lot smaller. The Auditorium wasn't built. The library was not in the front of the school back then. Also, the parking lot has been “upgraded”.
The lunchroom was on the back of the school where Mrs. Stilwell's old room was, not on the side. There was Lunch A and Lunch B, too, not just one big lunch like we have now. Chic-fil-a was served at lunch as well. Furthermore, the school also had a set smoking area for kids who smoked cigarettes.
Kendra remarked that late start Wednesdays were not a thing. They had 6 blocks instead of four. Home Economics was an elective. She stated, “It seems that the elective selections are slimmer.”
They did not have modern technology, like you might have guessed. Older computers, like the Apple Mactosh, were the new technology to them. With computers, all they learned was how to type.
Kendra noted that there are more differences than similarities. Football is still a major sport at Airport, and it was a community wide event. PDA was not addressed. Airport did charity drives, but they did not always raise money for Camp Chemo.
Kendra commented, “School has changed at it will continue to do so with the ever-evolving world.”
