AHS discusses Oscars, best picture snafu

The 89th Academy Awards were held on Sunday, February 26 at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, and the wrong best picture was announced.

Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway were the presenters for Best Picture. They were mistakenly given the best actress envelope which said “Emma Stone: La La Land.” Faye Dunaway announced “La La Land” as the best picture, and Oscars were handed out to the crew of the film. The Oscar producers and staff had to quickly step in and fix the situation, announcing that Moonlight had actually won best picture.

This is the only the second time a movie has been called for an award it didn't win. The first time was in 1967, but it was fixed before anyone took the stage, unlike this year.

The majority of AHS students and staff did not watch the Oscars. Many of the movies that were nominated students did not know about. Those students who had heard of them had only seen one or two of the movies. Many think the Oscar-type films are boring.

Students did hear about the Best Picture mix-up, however, along with the other winners though social media. The mix-up became huge news on the internet after it happened, and many memes and posts were made about the Oscars. The event gave the Oscars more coverage than it had in years.

Mrs. Stilwell, drama teacher, said, “I was shocked. I had never heard of anything like this happening. I went to bed right after La La Land was announced as best picture. I was so confused when I woke up the next morning and saw that Moonlight had actually won.”

One senior said, “I feel like the winners deserved their win, even though I didn't know most of them. I was super happy when I found out Viola Davis won though.”

Many people agree that this event caused more buzz about the the Oscars than normal, just like when Steve Harvey crowned the wrong Miss Universe a few years ago. It is estimated that views will be higher for next year's Oscars.
