AHS honors Black History Month w/ assembly
On Friday, February 26, Airport students, staff, and even a special guest all came together to celebrate and learn about black history. Airport as a whole has been doing activities throughout the month to specifically target students and inform them about what black history really is.
Dr. Elliott has created Google form to allow students to answer trivia questions for prizes throughout the month to get students thinking and learning about black culture, accomplishments, and challenges faced living in America . Not only have trivia questions been giving to Airport student but our very own English / Journalism teacher, Mrs. Rasmussen, hosted an essay contest which was inspired by this year's national theme: The Importance of Education in Black History.
Among the most visible forms of celebrations was the assembly. “The assembly was fun, and I really enjoined how the Special needs came out and sung for us, I can't wait for the next one," said Kristian Gilley who is a current freshman at Airport.
Special guest, Mrs.Johnson, a 59 year old elder, had a lot to say about black history. “I thought that the songs, speeches, and students were lovely; I just feel like we as Americans should not only take 28 days out of 365 days to acknowledge black people, black culture, black history. We as a nation need to love and appreciate blacks throughout the year. Black people aren't just black during February.”
Here is a fun fact about Black History Month; its precursor was created in 1926 in the United States, when historian Carter G. Woodson and the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History announced the second week of February to be Negro History Week.
