Black History 4th block buyout a success
On Friday, February 17, there was a black history buyout. Kids paid five dollars to go and go to the commons for free popcorn and drink, the arena for basketball, music or volleyball, the gym for basketball or the stadium to sit in the bleachers and watch girl JV play soccer. The event turned out very successful and Airport High School raised thousands of dollars in support of Camp Kemo.
Fourth block buyout has been a tradition at Airport longer than I have been attending, although the addition of a buy-out in conjunction with Black History Month is relatively new. It was a great opportunity for kids to get out of class while raising money for Camp Kemo. “The buyout was really fun,” said a current junior here at Airport, “plus, it was a great excuse to get out of class.” However, it did not seem to relate thematically to the month as whole.
“I didn’t buy out,” another different said, “but I wished I had everyone looked like they were having a great time.”
While the fourth block buy-out seemed to be very popular amongst the students, there were a lot of mixed opinions from teachers. “Most of my fourth block bought out despite the fact that we had a test,” an anonymous teacher said. “Now there’s half a class that needs to take the test and their blaming me.”
“I think that the buyout is a great way to get the kids involved in fundraising and helping out camp kemo," said a current English teacher.
Airport has many traditions and the Black History and Charity Week festivities are favorites for students and teachers.
