Students freak out about uniform rumors, misinformation
Early this year, rumors began swirling that all schools in South Carolina would be requiring uniforms starting next year, and students at AHS did not exactly welcome this potential.
So why is this news important? Dawn Dimmler, the assistant Principal of Airport, said, “It is important because when it came to the forefront I had never heard of it until a student asked me then when I realized a parent group is the one that initiated it from another district and it made the news I then was like okay let me hear. But then it’s not because it knew there was no way it was gonna get passed.” Is this whole rumor a fib?
As for what students think regarding this rumor, “I don't think we should wear uniforms because like each person dresses differently and it's like it explains their personality so everybody wears the same thing nobody is gonna feel different,” said Saudiah, a current student at Airport, as she expresses why she disagrees with the concept of wearing uniforms.
Who wears uniforms, and do they really solve problems? In 2017, 18 schools in South Carolina alone have been affected by uniform policies, according to wbtw.com. Studies show that 12% of students who wear uniforms rather than not wearing them before impacts them in a negative way, according to Resource.org. We can see that this maybe correct, as at George R.Pair, a alternative school that wears uniforms, still has fights and bullying to this day.
The same is likely true at Airport “because half of the fights that go around Airport has nothing to do with clothes,” said Quintez, a current student at Airport,.
As opposed to the negative aspects of uniforms, there are are also many good aspects of uniforms, however. Brad Coleman, the current principal at Airport said,“It does take away the stigma sometimes if students can dress really really nice versus students that kind of struggle with clothes.”
What should be done to make the students happy? “I just think it's important to get the other people's opinion,” said Saudiah, “about the uniform situation.”
More details regarding the uniform rumors will be forthcoming, but it seems as though it all stems from a bill that has been proposed in the state legislation rather than an actual mandate.
