Airport's Drill Team wins big
This past weekend Airport’s award winning drill team traveled to North Carolina to compete in the 4th brigade Best of the Best southeastern championship. They came back with 1st place overall for the third straight year.
The drill team, under the leadership of Command Sergeant Major Ferguson, traveled to Hickory North Carolina to compete. Being that they won this meet the past two years, they went in with high hopes and weeks of hard practice.
During his interview Sergeant Major gave this great quote saying, “ Winners practice till they get it right, and champions practice till they cannot get it wrong.”
With a long-standing tradition of winning dating back to the early 80’s, there was no doubt the team was looking for a win. And win they did! They were named this year’s regulation champions, third place armed platoon exhibition, first place in unarmed platoon exhibition, and first place overall in exhibition. Cadet Hall won first in armed knockout earning herself her own personal practice weapon. Although performing a great armed duet Cadets Richardson and Schwenker did not place.
One of the drill team commanders Hannah Hall said that “it's lit” to go out of state and when a drill meet.
Going in the team was up for the challenge. Being that they'd been here before they were ready to do it again. They were up and moving from before dawn to late afternoon.
The Airport JROTC program has produced great students many even enlist into the military. However, only about 30% of JROTC cadets end up enlisting in the military.
Next month, the team will travel to Louisville, Kentucky to compete in Army Nationals.
