My tour of Columbia College

As I step out of my car, I feel a rush of both excitement and nervousness come over me. It was my first college visit and I don’t know what to expect. I walk beside Maddison, who has been my best friend since kindergarten, up the sidewalk of Columbia College, our mothers following close behind us.

Before the tour, I was lost at the thought of college. I didn’t know if I should be afraid or happy - I didn’t know what to feel or what to expect at this open house. I’ll admit I’m pretty anxious at this moment.

First is the academic fair, which seemed like it was going to be a complete nightmare. Maddison and I walked into the room aligned with tables set up with professors of every available major the school offers. I find Helen Rapoport, a lecturer for the division of languages and literature, whom ran the table for Writing Print and Digital Media. I speak to her about my love for writing and she gives me a rundown of the classes she teaches and classes I will most likely want to take. She was the ideal person I needed to speak with, making the beginning of my visit to Columbia College so lovely.

Next on the list is to learn more about the college and to hear the current students input on their life here on campus. This is my favorite part of the open house so far. The students speak so highly of the school and inform us on the many organizations going on here at the college and activities they do during the year. One thing that sticks to me, though, is what they say about campus police. I’m so delighted to hear that the police officers are so entitled to their job. Altogether, the way the students speak about this school makes me have it known in my heart that this is my place - this is where I am meant to be.

The lunch at this school is spectacular; as is the dining hall. Once Maddison and I sit down to eat our lunch, across from us sat two C’esters. Throughout our lunchtime, the two girls answer any questions Maddison, I, or our mothers have about the college and what their experience here has been like. Later comes our tour around Columbia College’s beautiful campus. Our tour guides Alison and Caitlin educate us on the many qualities of the college and what life is like on campus. The tour seals the deal for me. I cannot help but imagine my life on this campus next year.

Before leaving, we are asked to fill out an evaluation of the open house. Even in such a short period of time, I have managed to fall in love with Columbia College. I have never felt more connected to a place before. Because of this, I write down, “I plan to attend in the fall!”

This college does seem like a home away from home.
