Airport HOSA takes on Fall Leadership 2016

On October 20, five of Airports HOSA members traveled to Newberry College where they attended the 2016 Fall Leadership Conference. The conference was intended to prepare the members for the State Conference coming up in March of 2017. HOSA’s Fall Leadership Conference is held annually.

Our HOSA team explained their busy day, beginning with the conference's picturesque setting. Madason W. told us that “most of it was held in the most beautiful church. They called it ‘Wiles Chapel’. It had glass painted windows, and a cross at the front of the room.” Kellie Wooten spoke about how all five of Airport's students had to choose a different event at one point to go to. They had the choice of touring the college, learning about life after concussions, how to be a leader, how to release the inner winner at competition, and a SIMS lab. When asked, Tre T. mentioned his favorite speaker was Brooks Harper: “He gave an inspirational speech at the end. He mentioned his motto, ‘turn your learning into earning and your passion into a paycheck.’ That will forever stick with me. It gets me motivated to start working on my event so I can go to nationals.” Madason mentioned how seeing all the people who went to nationals, and actually won from South Carolina at the conference, made her motivated to start. “I could've sat and listened to Gold medalist tell me how to get where they are forever," Whitaker stated.

In HOSA, there are many different levels to conference. You have your local, preparing conferences. You have your state conference, where you can elect next year's officers, compete in medical event to advance to national conference. At nationals, you compete in your same event but touch it up to make it a tad bit better. Nationals can be held anywhere across the country. This year it’ll be held at Disneyland.

What is HOSA? Literally, HOSA stands for Health Occupational Students of America. What about to our members? Senior, Kellie Wooten tells us about how HOSA is great way for her to connect with people who also want to be in the Healthcare field. However, Tre Taylor expresses how HOSA gets him “involved” and enhances to delivery of “compassionate quality healthcare." HOSA isn't held just for Airport students. People from all around the country, no matter what age group, join HOSA.

In March of 2017, our HOSA team will be travelling to myrtle beach to compete in the state events. As of August, they have been working hard towards a gold medal. The top three finalist in each event go to nationals. However, whoever wins first place in their event goes FOR FREE!
