Passion for music but never inspired to join high school band or chorus

I have attended Airport High School for four years and ever since I was a freshman the thought of being on the band and chorus crossed my mind numerous times. I was on the band all throughout elementary school and wanted to pick back up with the skill, but I never went through with it. Something was stopping me.

The atmosphere in the high school band was not the same as it was in the elementary school band. Because I went to elementary school in Hopkins, SC (a small country town) our school was built on love. Everyone knew everyone. So, when it came to being on the band it was like we all were a big family.

My love for music comes from multiple sources. I grew up listening to the soulful sounds of R&B music. My dad would always play legends such as Luther Vandross, Alicia Keys, Ashanti, Boyz II Men, and Jagged Edge.

Music as a whole has always been an outlet for me when I need to clear my head and ease my mind. So, I must say i shocked myself when i came to the realization that I did not want to join the high school band, nor sing on the chorus choir.

For some people, such as Shania Harrison, being apart of chorus in high school was a great experience. “Chorus was amazing. I gained new friends and a new family,” said Shania. “I learned that everyone has their own special way to sing,” said Shania, “but when everything comes together it sounds amazing.” Shania said it was her “choice to be in chorus” and when she took it in middle school she “fell in love with it.”

I have never been a fan of classical music and that is mostly what I hear from the band when they perform at assemblies. I also believe that because the band is so big I would not be as comfortable.

There will be a band competition on Saturday September 24 at Midland Valley. Contact 803-822-5600 for any questions.
