High school - college couple make relationship work

Every school year, there are students who begin their year off in a happy relationship, some being long distance due to college. This puts a weight on the relationships, causing the partnership to fail. However, there is hope for some.

Students at Airport High School are in long distance relationships where one partner is here and the other away at college. Maddison G., a senior here at Airport High, is in one of these relationships.

“For us it's all about trust, loyalty and commitment. We're committed to each other and just knowing that makes our relationship work no matter the distance,” said Maddison when asked how her and her boyfriend, Daniel C., make their relationship work.

“Well first it takes a lot of hard work and dedication. It can be hard at times but yet so rewarding,” said Daniel C., who graduated from Airport High in the spring and is now a freshman at USC Beaufort. “Once you've truly found that one individual who you want to spend your life with, nothing can stop you.”

Daniel continues on with saying that the most common reasons that make a relationship, in this situation, fail is due to lack of commitment and the wrong set of morals, values, and priorities. “Society also has taken a twist for the worst, and the twist doesn't help our generations relationships any,” Daniel states. “What I mean by this is most people of this generation don't have the same moral values and principles than say the people of the 1960's did; today's America is a different America.”

“I would say that our love has gotten stronger because of the distance, like we're very excited and eager to see each other when we can so it really makes us cherish the time we have together a lot more,” Maddison said.

“Commitment is very important in a relationship, as well as dedication, and knowing why you're with the person you're with. Knowing these key factors can be the start of a healthy and life long relationship,” Daniel states.

Maddison’s advice she said she would like to give to long distance couples is, “To stay committed and loyal to each other, don't do anything that you wouldn't want them to do to you, and communicate with each other.”

According to www.LongDistanceRelationshipStatistics.com, 32.5 % of all long distance relationships are college relationships.
