Students debate Junior-Senior prom; seniors outraged
Recently, rumors have been heard about Airport High School wanting to change things up and do a junior-senior prom. There is not set date for prom yet but the past few years, it has been sometime late April or early May.
Although the we have not gotten a definite answer, most of the students are highly upset about the idea because they do not want to share their prom with the juniors. Some people say the rumors about an upperclass prom have to do with our new principal, under whose leadership many rules have changed.
Prom has been held the last few years at 701 Whaley St. in downtown Columbia, in front of the Olympia Mills. Whaley St. connects Huger St. and Assembly St.
Most of the students are not so happy about this. The recent changes around the school are another thing that has the students upset. Graduation is also going to be outside on the football field, and that is something that most seniors are not looking forward to as well.
“It's going to be funny hearing everyone complain,” said senior Felipe Mar. According to him, it doesn't bother him that the juniors and the senior will be together during prom. He's totally fine with the idea. In his words, “It doesn't really bother me.”
Felipe also told reporters, “I'm just looking forward to showing off my gorgeous girlfriend.” So some seniors don't mind, they just want to spend prom with a special person, regardless of who else is there.
There are some senior that don't care and then there are others who are really bothered by this.
Airport has always had a senior prom, so most hope to keep the tradition going. Most highs schools in the area, like Grey, have a junior senior prom.
According to a survey done by Visa, the amount of money spent on related prom expenses by the average household is $978, as of 2014. More money would be spent because of the juniors also attending and it could really help businesses.
