TGC Symposium

Over the past weekend, the 2016-2017 cohort of TGC fellows convened for a conference in our nation's capital. We discussed storytelling and cross-cultural communication strategies, we were introduced with prominent members of IREX and the US State Department, and we learned about the country where we will be traveling from a local resident and former fellows. Most fun of all, however, was the opportunity we had to meet the other fellows traveling to the same country as us, which for me is Senegal. There was also a little bit of down town time, which I promptly took advantage of to tour some of the city.

Conference gear, just to show it's official. Each fellow picked up their conference materials as soon as they arrived to the hotel.
Here I am in front of the Watergate Hotel. I teach journalism, and my students had fun trying to guess what was behind me. I used it as an opportunity to teach about the 1970s scandal, which two reporters broke.
On the first day of the conference, we had the feast of a breakfast awaiting us. The State Department treated us VERY well.
Here is team Senegal, posing in front of the Senegalese flag after one of our country-specific breakout sessions.
One of the most fun parts of the entire weekend was getting to know our TGC fellows. Team Senegal met in the lobby of our hotel and wandered around Georgetown until we found this perfect Italian restaurant able to accommodate us all.
